Jilly's Rockworld and Music Box to close?
To stop sniping briefly, FUC51 has just heard that Jilly's Rockworld and Music Box are to close. Whilst we may not have liked the music especially, it was always nice to know these places existed.
From Jilly's Facebook page: "This is the worse news I have will ever have to impart here. It is with the heaviest of heart that I must tell you all that Jilly's Rockworld has finally closed its doors for the last time. As of now we are no longer. The recession has another victim. A great club and an institution in Manchester for many many years is now only history."

is there one on the Jilly's side?
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I think that message is probably pretty old, there have been rumours flying around for years about both. The gig on Saturday has been cancelled at the Music Box and all staff from both venues have been told it has closed down.
ReplyDeleteSad times! it'll be a cafe or some crap bar now!
ReplyDeleteStrange post. I thought nostalgia wasn't your thing? If enough people wanted to go to the clubs, they would still be open. They ran their course...
ReplyDelete"... may not have liked the music"???
ReplyDeleteThis was home to The Electric Chair! And loads of Friends and Family nights. It wasn't all shitty metal.
Just read on the NME news page that Peter Hook is deeply saddened by its closure probably as its another piece of his past he can't cash in on. Still, that's when you constantly fail to put your money into the 'right' causes. Still, perhaps he can buy the logo and the dancefloor before its too late.
ReplyDeleteThere's already a Manchester movement to venerate and laud the Electric Chair night and consecrate Elektriks in Chorlton, when in reality it's just another middle-class bar with overpretty staff and a chip on its shoulder.
ReplyDeleteFuc51 does not like any music unless it's played schoolchildren who only formed last wednesday coz that's how current they are. Anything else is shit and everyone older than 18 is sad and old. Get with the program...
ReplyDeleteOur aching sides
ReplyDeleteFuc51 doesn't seem to like anything that comes from Manchester at all, or anyone that does. Please enlighten us all if this isn't the case.
ReplyDeleteWe like tons of stuff from Manchester. Bands, clubs, there's a shedload of good stuff going on.
ReplyDeleteThere's also a shedload of crap and lazy stuff going on, and crap and lazy journalism about Manchester. That's why Fuc exists.
As we've mentioned elsewhere, this blog isn't called 'great things we love from Manchester' - that's another blog.
Well I'd say that negative sniping from the sidelines is also lazy. It's easy to be critical, that's why there are so many journalists. Maybe you should try 'that other blog', though I imagine that would be a little less 'easy'.

fuck do you have any idea what a whiny little pissyknickers you sound like?
I have no idea (I've only just arrived) but I imagine many of the people who write on or send things to this blog ARE engaged in cultural production of one sort or another. Just cos they're sick of the relentless and lazy media framing of all mancunian music in terms of a few bands and movements from two+ decades ago, and they don't think Hooky's croneyist 'heritage industry' music venue is in any way edgy or or vital, doesn't mean they don't do good things themselves.
AND ANYWAY, this is a scathing satirical blog, and some of you lurking old-guarders want it to be tamer, de-anonymised and somehow 'constructive'. for fuck's sake. It's a perfectly funny read as it is, and entirely fit for purpose. If you don't like it, you don't have to visit it. Just like Fac251 in fact!
PS RIP jillys and Rock World. Ah, a penny in on thursdays in the early 90s, and all the snake-bite and acid a young man could want for. Happy days.
"If you don't like it, you don't have to visit it. Just like Fac251 in fact!"
ReplyDeleteWell of course, except that FAC251 has got this blog blathering on about how shit it is, and backward looking etc etc....yawn. If you don't like it, don't go! Or perhaps start an anonymous blog in an attempt to assassinate the project instead.
Jilly's/Music Box is gone, now we have FAC251. Maybe something interesting will happen here eventually (though it might be a while given their rather dull students' money grabbing weekly agenda at the moment). Still, I'd rather it was there than some much needed city centre flats.
I'd rather it were flats.
ReplyDeleteWell, what a constructive response! This blog is for you.
ReplyDeleteA lot of posts on this blog seem fairly constructive to me, or did I miss something?
ReplyDelete"If you don't like it, don't go! Or perhaps start an anonymous blog in an attempt to assassinate the project instead."
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I think I'll do just that.
Good luck with your blog.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with yours Fuc, coz your schtick is getting tiresome, where you going with it now? Waiting for the next article featuring Hooky to be printed to give you some content?
ReplyDeleteLike many people have said before, your time might have been better spent championing some of the cities new talent, pointing toward something fresh happening or some other way of bringing something positive to the table. Instead you sit and rely on the 'old guard' you seem to despise so much to give you something to do.
Fuc do champion the city's new talent.
ReplyDeleteWe'd list some of the things our various members have been responsible / are still responsible for but as someone else on here said, a sniper never gives away his position.
