"You don't need to be Madchester to work here - but it helps"

A quick link before bedtime: Danny McFadden's piece on 'Has Manchester Had Its Day?'

  1. this site seems funny at first, refreshingly heretical even. We all think that Hooky is a grumpy, egotistical bullish twat. After the dust has settled though, we come to the realisation that this fuc51 is driven solely by pernicious ageism of the highest order. As bad as sexism and racism. At least Hooky's having a go and being positive. Johnny Lydon used to have a go at hippies but I've seen him smoking ganga. He used to quibble about boring old farts but he is now 54.We all mark our passage through time. In a couple of decades, you won't be the young turks you think you will always be, and kiddies will be deriding you, if we haven't moved on by then. You are in denial about such eventualities. And you are haters. this boring and destrucive ageism has been the bane of western ideology for far too long. I speak as as an old Haciendohite, and I call for reason. Wilson was in his late 50s when he died , does his age mean that he was a wanker? For fuck's sake, think outside the box, or this dull turn of events will never be broken. Some youngsters act like grouchy old men, in an attempt to seem worldly wise and sophisticated, usually to impress women.Hooky may be an obnoxious old cunt, but at least he's not being a dull cunt, in that he's opening a new cub/venue in town...discuss

  2. Ageism? It's not age we're irritated by - it's revivalism that's gone too far.

  3. Ageism - Bollocks! What has happened is that you can't contend to see the old 'Madchester' establishment in the past being criticised in such a way. Its a natural defensive instinct; it might be a bit hard at first, after seeing them held up as some sort of 'legends' by plenty of clueless whoppers over the years. Therefore, what you have come up with some sort of alternative theory to rationalise this criticism even though deep down you know its all true.

no one's denying anything. we're all well aware that this will happen and supportive of it. old farts ARE NOT MEANT TO INTERFERE in the matters of youth, not unless they have an amazing insight that truly matters (peter hook's monument to nostalgia is far far far from an amazing insight).

not only was wilson in his late 50s when he died he was always working with the absolute pits of local bands such as young offender's institute. he simply did not matter anymore when it came to pop music and youth happenings. he was still a great speaker and interviewer/ee, mind - if we take anything from this, it's this: PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS. hookaboy is a poor dj, a poor spokesman for manchester (tho the most apt spokesman for madchester arseholes), and basically an meddlesome aggressive tit who can't stand anyone dissing him. there's a long and checkered past of his dealings with local writer and local bands.

he's an obnoxious old cunt but as for justifying this by saying he's not dull? ridiculous reasoning, "hey at least ian juntley ain't dull eh lads, eh?"
    you silly old prick.

ps. don't ever say 'think outside the box' again.

  5. Forgot to add:

''At least Hooky's having a go and being positive''

''Hooky may be an obnoxious old cunt, but at least he's not being a dull cunt, in that he's opening a new cub/venue in town''

That in essence is the problem with the man. Most musicians are wise enough to know when their time is up, when the critical acclaim starts fading and the interest drops. They drop out of the attention span of the mainstream but still continue to provide music for their mosts dedicated fans.

The problem with Hooky is that he still thinks he is at the musical forefront. The cutting edge. In fact he clings to the idea. Google his interview session for the Guardian with Bloc Party when they were flavour of the month, albeit briefly. What the man needs to know is that Twisted Wheel, The Whip and Mani's DJ sessions are far from the cutting edge and that he is doing Manchester a disservice by presenting them to be. Run your club, extract the money from them daft enough to go there but dont claim you are doing something good for Manchester.

  6. Although i understand some people irritations at being constantly reminded of Manchester's musical heritage, i don't see this site offering anything new or positive to point towards. At least the people you deride have brought something to the table over the years, and without it, many of the southerners, bearded folk of Chorlton, university students etc would never have moved here in the first place.

  7. It's funny how you are irritated by 'revivalsim' but wear retro/vintage clothing isn't it?

  10. McFadden´s thing is from 2007. He quotes Gary Ryan with approval. Reni´s hat has done more for Manchester music than Gary Ryan has.

  14. Someone said something like this in a earlier comment on another posting and am increasingly believing it to be true...

Hooky and Fac251 is the best thing that could ever have happened, it's brought the issue to a head and polarised opinions. The kids need someone to rebel against, Hooky has stepped in and is pissing how own myth up against the wall.

Nice one Hooky, keep up the good work.

I don't see any reason why this site needs to offer anything new or positive. That is missing the point. The point is that if there is nothing worth saying, dont say anything at all. Manchester will continue to be a musical wasteland until everything stops being measured in the currency of 'Madchester'. How 'New-Ordery' or 'Happy Mondays' it sounds, as though it is a good thing.

''That article is 3 years old.

It is three years old but still relevant. That is what is most worrying. Also, for somebody accusing others of wasting time on this blog you seem to spend an awful lot of time on here.
