Make Up Yer Own Minds

This landed in the FUC51 inbox:

"25 mins in. Hooky talking about the club and Haslam having a go at nostalgia and "old men telling young people what to do is the complete opposite of what pop music should be about" or something."

  1. that#s surprising. well done to haslam for saying this but doesn't he play on his madchester/hacienda past quite heavily in his own writing and djing career? correct me if im wrong here. and he does sound like he has been reading the comments and posts on this blog, repeating some of the statements here word for word. it's great he's stood up and said this to a national audience, but it's easy to imagine him hosting a night at this venue so maybe it's a case of bandwagon-jumping or sour grapes? hopefully not as he's taken an admirable stance here. fuc51, maybe it would be a good idea to do a q&a with haslam about this?

also bit further on in that clip we hear the words "when i resurrected the hacienda brand". proof if it were needed that hook & co see the hacienda and its history as first and foremost a moneymaking venture, not a celebration of what the hacienda represented but a tawdry way of making money. horrible corporate sell-out bullshit.

  2. Haslam was agonising about doing the interview for this programme on his facebook mid-jan so it pre-dates this blog. Doesn't sound like he's expecting a gig at the venue anytime soon.

More interesting tho is what does Barney make of all this? Q&A Barney anyone??

  3. All credit it to Haslam, he was around in 'said' period and there is no reason why he shouldn't DJ such nights etc etc... but he has an eye on the future and has always been mega supportive of new bands.

People are always wanting to go dance in clubs to the music of yesteryear and that is fine but Dave recognises the awful cultural significance of FAC251 and has indeed spoken out!

Madchester club nights are what they are, is up to you if you attend or not.. it's when FAC251 say they are doing it for the kids that makes the whole thing sickening!

    Well done Dave!

  4. This is the same Dave (who I like) who Curates the DJ's for the Manchester International Festival? A festival which is an advert for this old town. A festival that works hard bringing students, business and Investment to the city. A festival which employed former Factory people, Saville and Wilson to mention just two. They were brought in to build on the success (not immediate, but long term) and impact that the Hacienda and Factory had on a global scale. There is a reason our Uni's are so popular. It's not because of the weather or Eccles cake's. I think Dave is trying to be controversial, in his own way. He plays that music all of the time. Its a bit hypocritical of him to say this now, because someone opened a club. Like I say, I doubt I'll ever go, I think your joke is going to blow up on you.

  5. I realy think FAC 251 is going to have a tough time staying open 7 nights a week unless it really gets the decent small/mid-level touring bands in. They're competing with the Deaf Institute, Academy 3 & Club Academy, Ruby Lounge, Roadhouse and Night and Day. Good luck.

  6. Not planning on ever entering those doors (again).

  7. there are too many venues open in manchester anyway, we should run a sweepstake on the first to go under. deaf rank highly as they're quickly losing their hold on that area of oxford road, plus the upstairs bit is crap for clubs and gigs (so bright! such a shit layout, takes too long when trying to go for a cig/drink). far too expensive also.

  8. Deaf institute is ace

  9. "takes too long when trying to go for a cig/drink"

Wha'? Are you on glue? A 3rd of the DI's upstairs live room IS the bar and you only need open the balcony doors to get to the smokin' area. If you know of anywhere in town with an easier tab/booze set-up please let me know as I'm chemically addicted to the both of 'em.

  10. eh? we're talking about the same deaf institute where the bar is DIRECTLY NEXT TO the dancefloor? where it can take 30 minutes to try and cross the room to get there and then you have to run the gauntlet of getting your drink knocked about. same with going for a cig, having to shove past people to reach that far corner. most ridiculous layout i've ever seen in a venue. that's just for gig nights, as far as clubbing venues go my old school assembly hall had a better atmosphere.

  11. Debating the real issues, live on Fuc51

  12. Sheesh. Well it must've been really rammed that night. What odds are you giving for the other local establishments in your 'first to go under' sweepstake? I might just get involved. Although I'll probably be betting against against the DI.

  13. if the Deaf Institute is that busy that it takes you 30 minutes to cross the dancefloor, it's probably not going to be the first to go under.

as for it losing it's hold on that area of oxford road though, you could be right: i hear the footage and the pub are making some really good live bookings of late.

  14. 30 minutes to cross the dancefoor = ketamin muncher

  15. point is, the only time deaf inst gigs work is when they're dead. otherwise you're shoved about, everyone watching the band is getting angsty, all the band can see are people facing away trying to get a drink. you can't treat people like cattle for long before other venues lure them away.

  16. Heaven forbid someone gets shoved aronud at a packed gig.

  17. The Deaf institute is ace. Stop fucking moaning about everything, its one of the best things to happen in ages. What venue is going to lure punters away? Club nights are fantastic as well.

  18. Deaf Institute is ace. Compare it with Night and Day or the Roadhouse. Sit at the back if you don't like standing in crowds. Or go home and stick a film on.
